Traffic has me baffled

In other, philosophy on August 3, 2009 at 10:37 pm

On my way to work this morning, I noticed something about traffic. So much of the driving experience depends on the car directly in front of you, however, when there is a problem or delay on the road, how rarely it is the fault of the car directly in front of you. How can something be so faultless yet so influential to the outcome of events?

This blows my mind. I am going to give this more thought.

18 things I’ve learned in the first 18 years of my life, and the privledges I now have.

In philosophy on March 15, 2008 at 10:06 pm

I’m an adult tomorrow and I’m not sure how I feel about this yet.

First, here is a list of everything that I am now permitted to do under the law:

(By the way, I am not a lawyer. So, if you need proper and official legal advice, please see a qualified source or seek proper legal council.)

  • I can refuse to answer questions
  • I can sign legal contracts or agreements
  • I can legally accuse someone else of being mentally ill
  • I can file a lawsuit
  • I can serve on a jury
  • I can get married
  • I can divorce
  • I can volunteer in the service
  • I can change my name
  • I can lease (most things)
  • I can rent a hotel
  • I can move out
  • I can buy a new car
  • I can purchase insurance
  • I can hunt alone
  • I can vote
  • I can hire a lawyer
  • I can go to a strip club
  • I can get a checking account
  • I can cancel my parent and or guardians name on my personal checking/savings account
  • I can visit and shop at adult-oriented stores
  • I can purchase tobacco products
  • I can smoke
  • I can purchase arms
  • I can purchase pornography
  • I can purchase, play and participate in the lottery
  • I can purchase canned air from an office supply store
  • I can purchase rubber cement from an office supply store
  • I can purchase M-rated games
  • I can rent R-rated movies from more restrictive video store chains
  • I can place a telephone order
  • I can purchase goods and/or services from an infomercial
  • I can have legally participate in and/or have sexual relations with another adult
  • I can film myself, photograph myself, or participate in a solo fashion, in a sexually explicit manner within a legally permitted environment.
  • I can rent adult media
  • I can purchase a house
  • I can get a tattoo without consent of a parent or guardian
  • I can get a piercing without consent of a parent or guardian
  • I can attend to an 18+ club
  • I can see a doctor without the knowledge of my parent or guardian

Second, here is a list of all of the things I have learned in the 18 years of my life:

1. I do not know everything and I do not have all the answers.

2. Listening to what others have to say is often more beneficial than contributing your opinions.

3. Smoking cigarettes IS truly ‘bad’ for one’s health. I have never met a true smoker (in contrast to a dabbler), yet, who has suggested that smoking did or does them anything more than provide an addiction.

4. First impressions of people are usually inaccurate.

5. There is more power in literature than the majority of people think.

6. If you pick your hero based on who everyone else picks, you’re not actually picking a hero.

7. Statistics are usually not completely accurate.

8. Exercise is one of the most powerful non-medicinal tools against stress.

9. On an average day, many people (including myself) do not step out of the box to do something positive for someone else. When I have the opportunity to step out of the box to do something positive for someone else, it makes me feel really good.

10. It is never a good idea to panic, in any situation, ever.

11. Everyone learns in different ways.

12. Finding a time during the day to reflect on oneself is a vital step towards a balanced day.

13. Some of the most depressing moments in life are not necessarily the tragedies, but instead, the moments when you surround yourself with negative thinking and people who constantly complain.

14. Television is one of the biggest distractions in modern society.

15. The ‘journey’ is usually better than the ‘destination’. The ‘destination’ is usually a reward or token which symbolizes the greatness of the ‘journey’.

16. Being honest is always the most important thing, even if it is painful.

17. Learning in itself, is designed primarily to be an experience for the self, not society.

18. Life is too short to waste.

With these things that I have learned combined with the privileges to which I am now legally entitled, I plan on living on living and exploiting the result of my learnings.

I am very happy to be alive and especially happy to reach adulthood, but I want to take every moment slowly and fully because I don’t want to miss a minute of whatever is to come in the future.
